🧠 Why Traders Book Profit Early but Hold Losses Too Long?
• 35d agoHave you ever closed a trade at +₹1,000 because you didn't want to lose the profit…
…but kept another trade at -₹3,000, hoping it would come back?
👉 This is one of the most common psychological traps in trading.
💚 Why do we book profits quickly?
Once a trade turns profitable, the mind often starts thinking:
“What if I lose this profit?”
So instead of following the original plan, the trader closes the position to lock in a small gain.
The trade feels safe.
But there is a problem.
👉 The market may continue moving in the original direction after we exit.
The result?
Small profits get booked quickly, while bigger opportunities are left behind.
🔴 Then why do we hold losing trades?
This is where loss aversion comes in.
A realised loss feels more painful than an unrealised loss.
So the mind starts looking for reasons to stay in the trade:
“It will come back.”
“Let me give it a little more time.”
“I don't want to book the loss yet.”
And sometimes the original stop-loss gets moved further away.
🧠 Another problem: We want to be RIGHT
A losing trade can feel like a challenge to our analysis.
Instead of asking:
“Is my original trade idea still valid?”
we start asking:
“How can I prove that I was right?”
That's when patience can quietly turn into denial.
⚠️ Watch for these warning signs
👉 Moving your stop-loss only because the trade is losing
👉 Increasing quantity to recover the loss
👉 Removing the original exit plan
👉 Holding because “price will surely come back”
👉 Booking every small profit but giving losing trades unlimited room
These are not necessarily signs that the market is wrong.
They may be signs that emotion has replaced the trading plan.
📋 What can help?
Before entering a trade, define:
Entry → Stop-Loss → Target → Risk → Exit Rule
And once the trade starts moving, try to follow the rules you created before the emotion arrived.
A trading journal can also reveal the pattern.
Look back at your last 20–30 trades:
How big are your average winners?
How big are your average losers?
The numbers can sometimes tell you what emotions hide.
🎯 Patience vs Denial
Patience:
“I will stay because my original setup is still valid.”
Denial:
“I will stay because I don't want to accept the loss.”
That difference can completely change how a trader manages risk.
