INTRODUCTION TO OPTION CHAIN: WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING AT?

β€’ 35d ago

πŸ‘€ Opened the Nifty Option Chain and felt like you were looking at a wall of numbers?

You're not alone.

At first, an option chain can look complicated because it puts Calls, Puts, Strike Prices, Premiums and other numbers together in one place.

But you don't need to understand everything at once.

🧭 So, what is an Option Chain?

An Option Chain is simply a list of available Call (CE) and Put (PE) option contracts for different strike prices and expiries.

Think of it as a map of the options market.

It helps you see what contracts are available and how the market is positioned around different Nifty levels.

πŸ“ Start with the Strike Price

Suppose Nifty is trading around 25,000.

You may see strikes such as:

24,900 | 24,950 | 25,000 | 25,050 | 25,100

These are the different Strike Prices.

The strike closest to the current Nifty level is generally referred to as the ATM (At-The-Money) strike.

This is where you should start looking at the chain.

🟒 What are CE and PE?

You'll normally see two sides:

CE β€” Call Option

PE β€” Put Option

A Call and a Put are different option contracts, with different payoff characteristics.

For now, you don't need to understand all the Greeks or advanced strategies.

Just remember:

πŸ‘‰ CE and PE are the two basic sides of an option chain.

πŸ’° What about all those numbers?

You'll also see information such as:

LTP | Open Interest | Change in OI | Volume | IV

Don't try to understand all of them in one go.

That's exactly what we'll explore in the upcoming posts.

🧠 Think of the Option Chain like this:

NIFTY LEVEL
⬇️
STRIKE PRICE
⬇️
CALL (CE) ↔ PUT (PE)
⬇️
Other data points

Once you understand this basic structure, the option chain starts looking much less intimidating.

⚠️ One important point

The option chain is a source of market information, not a crystal ball.

A particular OI number or premium does not automatically tell you where Nifty will go.

The real skill comes from understanding what each component means and how different pieces of information fit together.

And that's what we'll cover step by step.

πŸ’¬ Let's Start Simple

When you first opened an option chain, what confused you the most?
